Dyslexia – Famous People

Dyslexia is defined as a condition of neurodevelopmental origin that mainly affects the ease with which a person reads, writes, and spells, typically recognized as a specific learning disorder in children. 

While you or your child may have dyslexia, you are not alone. There are an estimated 43.5 million Americans diagnosed with dyslexia. Among those, unsurprisingly are celebrities, scientists, and artists. What may surprise you are those who have dyslexia. 

Below are just a few known to have dyslexia. 

  • Cher, one of the world’s most beloved and acclaimed entertainers, has struggled with both dyslexia and dyscalculia.
  • Anderson Cooper, the six-time Emmy Award-winning journalist is the face of news to millions across the world, but it’s an accomplishment he never thought he’d achieve as a boy struggling to read.
  • Robing Williams, known as one of modern history’s most iconic comedians, Robin Williams has made his early struggles with “severe” dyslexia known throughout his career.
  • Keira Knightley, as a girl, Knightley struggled with reading due to her dyslexia, but it was a screenplay written by Emma Thompson of Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” that helped the actress push through the challenges.
  • Albert Einstein, perhaps one of the most famous figures known to have dyslexia is Albert Einstein, a theoretical physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 and has become synonymous with intelligence and wit.
  • Pablo Picasso is one of the most prolific and creative artists of the 20th century. His school applied the term ‘reading blind’, to define his difficulties in reading, but his dyslexia allowed him to show the world his backward or out-of-order autistic vision through his art. 
  • Richard Branson, the billionaire struggled with dyslexia as a child, leading him to adapt and gain thinking skills that proved to provide major advantages. 
  • Henry Winkler, known as the iconic character ‘The Fonz from Happy Days, struggled with dyslexia and did not read his first book until he was 31 years old. 
  • Octavia Spencer, the oscar-winning actress may have struggled with reading due to dyslexia, but could solve puzzles in 30 seconds. She conveys her deductive reasoning was very important, and dyslexia does not limit your path.
